Writing Assignment: Students are writing an original narrative that should be at least 3 pages long based on a painting of their choosing. (See Google Classroom for specifics)

Reread Boy's Life and "Emancipation: A Life Fable". Write a theme sentence that applies to both passages. Then, begin planning for the essay. Choose your two pieces of text evidence from each passage (for a total of 4 pieces of evidence), and create an outline for your essay. Use the attached notes to see the two ways you could use to structure your essay. Choose one of these structures depending on which makes the most sentence for your theme sentence.

Finish your 2 versions of an ending for your memoir. A complete 1st draft must be in your shared folder for Monday.

Quarter 2 Book Talk due 12/13. This document must be placed in your shared folder. It MUST be labeled "Quarter 2 Book Talk 1".  Make sure to reference the rubric. 

Continue drafting the body of your memoir (exposition through falling action). Friday we will work on how to write a strong resolution. A complete 1st draft of your memoir will be due on Monday the 17th.

 

Things to keep in mind when drafting the body

- Pacing- which events do you need to go over in detail and which can you skip over quickly?

- Choosing the right detail that gets to the heart of your story

- Balancing description and dialogue

- Showing instead of telling

- Using descriptive language/imagery/figurative language to help your read picture the scene

Read and annotate "Off the Shelf" by Patti Smith. Annotate for inferences as well as plot structure (identify exposition, rising action, climax, falling action- if any- and resolution). As you annotate, think about why this memory was important enough to create a story and what new understanding the author has at the end of the story. 

Complete Graveyard Book Final Assessment if not finished in class

Prepare for tomorrow's Graveyard Book Final Assessment. You may choose your prompts, write your claim and choose your text evidence but should not begin drafting. 

Read chapter 8 of The Graveyard Book. Create 3 deep thinking annotations (no summary or questions) and 1 discussion question.

Reach part 3 of chapter 7 in The Graveyard Book (pages 251 after the break- 292). Create 3 deep thinking annotations and 1 discussion question. 

Read part 2 of chapter 6 in The Graveyard Book (page 191 after the break- 210). Create 3 deep thinking annotations and 1 discussion question. 

If you have late annotations from chapters 3 or 4 of The Graveyard Book, you have until Friday November 22nd to turn them in for a late grade. We have input the annotations that we have received in Aspen so check your grades. If those assignments are blank or a 0, we have not received your annotations for that section. 

Read the 1st part of Chapter 6 in The Graveyard Book (from pages 174 to the break on page 191). Make 3 deep thinking annotations and 1 discussion questions. Remember that your 3 graded annotations should demonstrate your ability to make meaning of the text. They should not be summary or additional questions (especially right-there questions).

Complete your Graveyard Book assessment if not completed in class.

Review chapters 1-4 in The Graveyard Book. In your notebook, update your Bod's Journey chart in your notebooks for chapters 3 and 4 (chapter 2 should already be complete, but if it is not update that as well) Below is an example of the 3-column format for your chart

Read from the last line of page 81 to the end of chapter 3 (page 98) in The Graveyard Book. Make 3 annotations and 1 discussion question.

Think about a memory of a first friend. Be prepared to write tomorrow. 

Write two discussion questions related to The Graveyard Book chapter 1 and bring them into class tomorrow. Remember, a good discussion question should be open to multiple interpretations and needs to be supported by text evidence. 

The Graveyard Book: Write 1 paragraph answering the following. (10 sentences)

 

How do the first few paragraphs set the tone for the rest of the novel? What kind
of atmosphere do they create? How do they make you feel? How has the author
created this atmosphere? Think about the structure of the opening sentences,
and choice of words.
