8th grade Waves Assignments

Instructor
Teacher Hang Becker
Term
2019-2020 School Year
Description
The fundamental characteristics that describe wave behavior and properties are described in terms of mathematical relationships and graphical models. This course proceeds from the most concrete observations, those of physical properties of mechanical waves, to the most abstract concepts, by which students develop a model of electromagnetic waves.

Our unit, Waves, is broken up into 3 investigations, with multiple parts and focus questions.

This course supports the following principles set forth in A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas.

Science and Engineering Practices
1. Asking questions and defining problems
2. Developing and using models
3. Planning and carrying out investigations
4. Analyzing and interpreting data
5. Using mathematics and computational thinking
6. Constructing explanations
7. Engaging in argument from evidence
8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

Crosscutting Concepts
- Patterns
- Cause and effect: Mechanism and explanation
- Scale, proportion, and quantity
- Systems and system models
- Energy and matter: Flows, cycles, and conservation
- Structure and function
- Stability and change

WEEK 31: 4/27- 5/1         *SCHOOL CLOSURE plans
Waves

Focus Question: What is the best way to insulate a recording studio from outside sound?

Students will reflect on how different materials affect sound waves (absorb or reflect) and think about sound made in an empty space. They will also reflect on their own engineering process and compare to how they previously laid out the steps. Students will explore the oscilloscope on Fossweb.com to further reinforce their understanding of the relationships between amplitude, frequency and volume. They will go over all their notes to prepare for the investigation 2 test.

Waves

Focus Question: What is the relationship between wave properties and wave energy? and How are engineering challenges solved?

Students will determine the relationships between wave amplitude, frequency, wavelength and energy. In addition, they will consider the Tacoma Narrows Bridge case study. After learning about the bridge failure, they will consider the steps required to solve an engineering problem. They will learn more about the decisions made in the Tacoma Narrows design.

Waves

Focus Question: What defines a wave? and What is the relationship between wave properties and wave energy?

This week, you will finish Investigation 1 by understanding the parts of a wave. You will continue onto Investigation 2 to learn about mechanical waves, which travel through medium. You will watch a video about ocean waves as an introduction to wave energy. After defining energy, you will determine the relationships between wave amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and energy.
