Description
CPS recognizes the need for a comprehensive approach to sexual health education that is applied consistently throughout the District. This Policy reflects the Board’s commitment to ensure that the District’s comprehensive family life and sexual health education programming:
 is aligned with the National Sexuality Education Standards: Core Content and Skills, K-12;
 is developmentally appropriate;
 provides strategies to support all students regardless of gender, race, disability, sexual
orientation, gender identity, gender expression;
 is culturally sensitive;
 provides a focus on health promotion and risk reduction within the context of the world in
which students live;
 is medically accurate;
 emphasizes abstinence as a component of healthy sexual decision-making and the only
protection that is 100% effective against unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted
infections and HIV when transmitted sexually;
 includes instruction that promotes a wholesome and comprehensive understanding of the
emotional, psychological, physiological, hygienic and social responsibility aspects of
sexuality and family life;
 is consistent with State laws enacted to address the need for students to receive
comprehensive health education;
 emphasizes that parents/guardians are the primary sexual health educators for their
child(ren);
 offers parents/guardians information on comprehensive sexual health education provided to
students via the District-approved education lessons; and
 offers parents/guardians the opportunity to opt their child(ren) out of comprehensive sexual
health education lessons in accordance with State law.
 
The following lessons make up the 8th grade Sexual Health Education curriculum:

Lesson 4: Decision Making 
Lesson 5: Relationships-Keeping It Healthy
Lesson 6: Relationships- Influences
Lesson 7: Relationships- Communication

Lesson 3: Decision Making 
 
Students will apply a decision making model to various sexual health circumstances, to promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective communication.

Lesson 2: Teen Dating Violence 
 
Students will describe situations and behaviors that constitute bullying, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, sexual assault, incest, rape, and dating violence. They will discuss the impacts of these behaviors and why they are wrong. In addition, students will describe ways to treat others with dignity and respect and advocate for safe environments that encourage dignified and respectful treatment of everyone.

Lesson 1: (Cyber)Bullying
 
During this first lesson, students will describe situations and behaviors that constitute bullying, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, sexual assault, incest, rape, and dating violence. They will identify sources of support such as parents or other trusted adults, as well as demonstrate ways to communicate with these trusted adults about the challenging situations. They will discuss the impacts and demonstrate ways they can respond when someone is being bullied or harassed.
