The fundamental characteristics that describe wave behavior and properties are described in terms of mathematical relationships and graphical models. This course proceeds from the most concrete observations, those of physical properties of mechanical waves, to the most abstract concepts, by which students develop a model of electromagnetic waves. Our unit, Waves, is broken up into 3 investigations, with multiple parts and focus questions. This course supports the following principles set forth in A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas.Science and Engineering Practices1. Asking questions and defining problems2. Developing and using models3. Planning and carrying out investigations4. Analyzing and interpreting data5. Using mathematics and computational thinking6. Constructing explanations7. Engaging in argument from evidence8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating informationCrosscutting Concepts- Patterns- Cause and effect: Mechanism and explanation- Scale, proportion, and quantity- Systems and system models- Energy and matter: Flows, cycles, and conservation- Structure and function- Stability and change

WEEK 34: 5/13- 5/17
Focus Questions: What is frequency and What defines a wave?
Students will finish this first investigation by comparing the two types of waves, completing a concept map and assessment. Then we will have a session to practice for the REACH Performance Task, which will take place at week's end.
IMPORTANT DATES:
- Investigation 1 assessment (AOL)- group A: 5/10 and group B: 5/13
- REACH Performance Task- group A: 5/16 and group B: 5/17

WEEK 33: 5/6- 5/10
Focus Questions: What is frequency and What defines a wave?
Students will measure their pulse under different circumstances. They will use the pulse rate to calculate frequency and consider repeating patterns. Then, students will make two types of spring waves: longitudinal and transverse. They will observe wave reflection and make waves with different wavelengths, frequencies, and amplitudes. They will learn the key parts of a wave and measure and diagram a wave.
IMPORTANT DATES:
- Investigation 1 assessment (AOL)- group A: 5/14 and group B: 5/15
- REACH Performance Task- group A: 5/16 and group B: 5/17
