Hello and Welcome to Third Grade!

We’re Excited You’re Here!!

Our summer reading book is a wonderful story by Mona Lisa DeGross entitled Donavan’s Word Jar. As you read, we have a couple of activities for you.

·       Prior to reading the book, take a look at the title, the picture on the cover, and the text on the back cover.  Based on these three aspects of the book, what do you think this book will be about?  Write your response on the inside front cover.

·       Read to page 14 of Donavan’s Word Jar.  You will notice that there is a STOP SIGN with a question on page 14.  Please take a moment to stop, think, and then respond to the question.  Go ahead and write your response in the book.

·       Continue reading to the end of the story on page 71.  Again, there is a STOP SIGN and 2 questions for you to take a moment to think about.  Write your responses for both questions on

     pages 71& 72.

After you have read …

·       We would like you to gather exciting and new words that you come across on your summer vacation.  Put the new words on slips of paper and put them in the library pocket in your book.  We are going to use these when you return to school in September.

Have a great time reading this book this summer. We’re sure that it won’t be the only book you read but we think it will be one of your favorites.  We are looking forward to starting our school year with this fabulous story.

Have a great summer!  See you on September 2nd,

Ms. Rownd, Mr. Arnold, Mrs. Martin & Mr. Wise
