Summer Reading Project for
First Graders! Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes
Dear
Incoming First Graders and Parents,
Welcome
to your first Hawthorne summer reading project! Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Wilson selected a favorite first grade
story written by a favorite first grade author. We hope you enjoy spending time together and working on this
project.
Find
a spot in the house where you and your child can read and discuss the story Chrysanthemum
by Kevin Henkes. Use the following
questions to help guide your discussion and set up the project, but feel free
to discuss the story further.
· How
does Chrysanthemum feel about her name?
· How
do her parents feel about it?
· Does
Chrysanthemum’s opinion about her name change by the end of the story? How? Why do you think this happens?
Questions
for you and your child to answer together (about your child’s name):
1.
What
is your full name – first, middle, and last?
2.
What
is your nickname, if you have one?
3.
What
is your favorite thing about your name?
Parents,
please ask your child these questions and write down what they answer on the
paper provided (click here).
Think
about how and why you gave your child his or her name. Next, tell your child “the story of
his/her name.” Be as detailed and
accurate as possible.
Finally, have your child retell you “the story of his/her name” and
record his/her story as he/she tells it.
Use your child’s words and language.
Your
child needs to bring the answers to the questions and “the story of his/her
name” during the first week of school in September. Please help your child practice reading or familiarizing
him-/herself with the story several times before the school year begins.
Over
the course of the first few weeks of school, the first graders will share their
stories and use them to create an exciting first class project together! We cannot wait to hear these stories
and show you how we use them in our beginning-of-the-year community building!! Looking forward to a great school year,
Mrs. Hughes (112) & Mrs. Wilson (107)
